Martha's Kitchen
August 19, 2021 | Kingwood, TX

Martha’s Kitchen opened in 1992 when Msgr. Tinney was Pastor, with Sister Maria Elena Lopez as Director and Sister Julianne Sandoval as Assistant Director. Sister Carmen Sanchez took over the position as Director in January of 2019 after our beloved Sr. Maria Elena passed away into our heavenly Father's arms. Martha's Kitchen has three other full-time employees and about 20 or more volunteers each day, Monday through Friday. They prepare, serve, and clean up after the hot nutritious lunches are served to 250 to 350 hungry men, women, and children. The vast majority of volunteers belong to St Martha’s community, but some volunteers come from other churches and social service organizations, including non-Catholics. Financial contributions are critical to the work of Martha’s Kitchen and essential to continuing this ministry. Although some contributions come from large corporations, 70% come from Parishioner/individual donations. Generous donations of food products also come from several local grocery stores and restaurants. Despite these food donations and the fact that the Kitchen gets as much food as possible from the Houston Food Bank, much of the food and supplies must be purchased from other sources. The generous sharing of time, talent, and treasure by so many has allowed us to operate since 1992, feeding the hungry in Houston.
